Maybe this question is old? I'd like to hear from the side of musicians which qualities they like in a dancer, when it comes to playing for them or just like that.. Anything that comes to mind.

Source for Arabic neys?

I have a friend who is in the market for some neys - a full set and / or individual ones.

Can anyone recommend a good source? They need to have correct intonation, not "student" quality or wall hangers!

Thanks,
To Anyone Interested in Studying Music in Turkey... We've finally got a Guest House designed for musicians!

...Hey guys, I'm very excited to finally be spreading the word about this. For those of you who know me or have followed my blog postings in the past, you probably already know that I've been involved in a long term project in Istanbul. I'm proud to say that Sound Fabrika Studios has finally finished preparations and we're open for business!

What we're doing here is trying to help foreigners who come to Turkey connect with some of the great musicians in the city here for lessons and music research. Right now we're running this place as a sort of guest house, but a guest house with a sound-insulated practice space, and some of the best of the youngest generation of musicians teaching and helping people like us network and get involved in the diverse and wonderful music scene here.

For a price comparable to most pensions in the area we are offering a warm bed, bathroom w/ shower, turkish breakfast and free reign to use the practice rooms here from 8am-midnight whenever classes or private lessons aren't going on. (and finding somewhere to play a davul at 11pm at night is no easy task here!). We've also spent a lot of time working out agreements with some really phenomenal musicians, and we can arrange lessons with all forms of percussion (darbuka, bendir, kudum, asmi davul, udu drums etc.) as well as oud, baglama saz, kanun, clarinet, roman violin and many more....

I'd be happy to send you more information about specific teachers and more details about our lesson programs if any of you guys are interested in what we're doing here. I'm also happy to provide some references from some of the americans that I have met coming through who have studied with some of these teachers as well, so feel free to ask. We also have connections with some prominent oriental dance teachers in the city and are happy to help dance students connect with them as well.

I got involved in this project originally because of my own experiences living in the city here my first year and trying really hard to find good teachers.... it's no easy task. I've recently been making an effort to get more video online of what some of these guys can do. You can check out Hakan, our resident percussion teacher on some of the clips I've uploaded the other day:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vh93KRxAp7w

I love being able to find these great musicians work as much as I love being able to help students find really good teachers, and I think the sentiment is shared by everyone working on this with me. I hope some of you guys get a chance to take advantage of this stuff!

Feel free to drop me an email at raghebn@gmail.com with any questions, or you can try me on tribe (though I check my account here less often lately)

Kolay gelsin!

Help finding info on "Shrook" by Samira Saied

Howdy

I'm wondering if anyone can help me verify the artist and help me find the album to a song I've found in MIDI files.

If your system can play MIDI, the link is at http://www.focusmm.com/sound/amusic/shrook.mid

As far as I can find, the artist may (may not?) be Samira Said also spelled sometimes Samira Saied. However, I can't find the song listed on any of the discographies I can find online and of course, I can't find an album from any of my 'usual' sources that has the song.

Anyone familiar and can help me with the info?

I heard on Bhuz.com that another singer recorded a more modern version, but the person who posted that info couldn't remember the name of the singer.
Any assistance?
Thanks!

SUNDAY MAY 11th. DRUM WORKSHOPS
@ Studio IQAAT (Donovan's Studio)
3515 eagle rock blvd. La. Ca 90065
*****
ARAB DRUM WORKSHOPS "SAIDI, SAUDI, SUDASI" (SSS): Sunday
1pm - 3pm, $25 at door only.

Students may bring their Arabic Tabla, Dumbek, Darabuka, Riqq, Duff, Muzhar or Frame drum. Karim will teach these three dynamic rhythms, emphasizing the Arab technique of double off-hand taks and running method. Students will learn how these rhythms propel specific dance styles from around the Arab world. Karim engages all levels from advanced beginner (someone with basic skills) to advanced intermediate.

Every level will be adequately challenged and will benefit from the ensemble approach.
---SAIDI (Southern Egyptian) is used for cane dance, ghawazee, pop and folk music. Karim will teach a four part Saidi with emphasis on the empty first beat, and slow yet bubbling tempo.
---SAUDI (Arabian Peninsula) is used for "Khaliji" urban and popular folk music. Karim will teach the polyrhythmic multipart version that illustrates the Afro-Indo influence.
---SUDASI (Lebanese and Palestinian) is used for Dabka unisex line dance. Karim will teach this unique yet common 6/4 rhythm with variations to accent stomp choreographies.

RIQQ (ARAB TAMBOURINE): : Sunday 3:30pm - 5:30pm, $25 at door only.
The "Riqq" tambourine is the lead percussion instrument in the Arabic orchestra and classical ensemble. It is played with the fingers on
both the skin and the cymbals. The technique calls for three different holding positions and techniques. In addition to Arabic music, these
instruments are widely used in Turkish, Iranian, Balkan, Gypsy and Mediterranean music. Students will learn technique, stamina, rhythmic
repertoire and various ethnic styles.

Karim Nagi is recognized as one of the foremost performers of the Arabic style Riqq in the USA. He has performed Riqq with the Sharq Ensemble, Chicago Oriental Ensemble, Boston Camerata, and Simon Shaheen. He has taught Riqq at the New England Conservatory, Tufts University, and Arabic Music Retreat and the Heartland Seminar on Arab Music. He has authored a comprehensive Instructional Riqq

Can someone say something about those rhythms? I know how they go but they seem to be rare, not standard. I read someone wrote that Wahda Sogayara was = Maksoum, ok I can hear the similarity but the Maksoum has still such a different caracter. Are those rhythms not used anymore, like Masmoudi Kibir? When or where were they played? What mood would you musicians attribute to them?

Darker Mid-, Near- Eastern Music?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could provide some suggestions for some Mid-, Near- Eastern music. I draw toward darker artists, albums, moods much more than lighter; those that hold thunder and night in them. I seem to come across a lot of metal and neoclassical -not a great fan of either- when searching. Also, not too fond of new age or ambient, electronica or "worldbeat", most I've heard makes me cringe- too plastic and inauthentic- but I love Niyaz. I suppose like anything, if it is done well it transcends. So, traditional or modern(without too much sticky gloss). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks very much.

About Issam Houshan

The union of music and movement is the essence of dance. The union of a musician and a dancer to create a seamless artistic expression is the ultimate manifestation of such a union. Issam Houshan does exactly that. Call him the “Wassan Pharaoun,” “King of the Drum,” or “Mr. Magic Fingers” and you only tell the half of it. His connection to the dancer is the essence of his magic, a merging of egos serving a mutual and identical goal. Issam is now recognized as the ultimate master of this art. An international music star, his past credits include touring with Sting in 2000, performing at the Grammys on the hit single Desert Rose, as well as performing and recording with countless Arab stars. In addition, he has toured with the Mile Copeland-produced Bellydance Superstars, the world’s premiere professional touring bellydancer performance group since 2003, with whom he has appeared in over 1000 shows in 16 countries over the past three years.

A highly accomplished percussionist on assorted Arab hand drums, Issam was formally trained at the Damascus Academy of Music and is the only remaining disciple of the legendary Arab drum master Mahmood Salahadeen. An accomplished and sought-after music instructor, he taught at the Damascus Music Institute for nine years and continues to teach workshops and private lessons around the world. Unequaled in his field, Issam is known by fellow Syrian musicians as the Wassan Pharaoun (Pharaoh of Rhythm) and his al assaben al Sahriha (magic fingers) are currently insured for 10 million dollars (1 million each).

His drum solos with the Bellydance Superstars are major features of each show, as captured in the films American Bellydancer, Solos from Monte Carlo, Bellydance Superstars, 30 Days to Vegas, Behind the Shimmy, and the instructional DVD The Art of the Drum Solo. His CD releases include his own Wassan Pharaoun, The Dancing Drum and Tabel Ya Issam, as well as percussion on the Galactic Caravan albums.
I thought that was maybe stupid, because France, having the largest Arab population around Europe would maybe offer a larger selection I couldn't access then! Does it matter where I register?

Hi KBN,
you did a beautiful cd! I love it! It is musically great and so-o-o inspiring! so many things popped up in my mind that I have to learn if I want to dance to these pieces. Yesterday I had the perfect opportunity to listen to it, great quality hi-fi equipment, a large room all to myself and nobody interrupting me while listening to the beautiful music...
(Maybe you'd also integrate the violin which I love too, and the ney).
Wow United States for you have musicians and composers that can do beautiful, fresh arab music that is perfect for dancing!

Marketing to musicians? help!!!

I am cross posting this to Middle Eastern Musicians and the SCA ME Music Tribe too....

I am totally frustrated with the musician community in Atlanta, I just hosted Raquy and the Cavemen in a concert and workshop and not only did next to no musicians that I know show up at the show only one person came to the workshop. I am on lots of email lists and I know that a lot of the community leaders knew about the show but didn't bother to come or to recommend it to their groups. I am at a loss! Even at TribalCon when I have three entire days of music workshops the majority of the music class attendees are people from out of town. Is something just wrong with Atlanta or am I marketing it wrong? Raquy is amazing! Why would any musician not come to an amazing show like that? Why would anyone not come to her workshop? We had about 15 the first time she came through and got rave reviews and everyone asked for me to bring her back.

Help! I would love to get a more active Middle Eastern music community going and can even get them gigs if they get off their butts...what do I need to do?

Is Boukra Taaban (A Sha'bi song) okay for melaya?

I am not searching for a full translation of this song but I am only asking if it's "intent" is appropriate.

This song is on the CD One NIght in Cairo I believe, the artist is Tabek Al Araby.
I recognize it as Sha'bi, but I am not able to locate the lyrics to determine if it appropriate for a Melaya choreography. It's extremely fun sounding and upbeat, but you know that can be deceiving!

I would greatly appreciate anyone's assistance!
Tahnks,

Hi,
I'll have the opportunity to do an interview with a lebanese oud player and singer. I'll try to publish it either in a German bellydance magazine or else in a magazine dedicated to the oriental world, a small one, for a mixed public.
What questions would interest you, or what would you think could be of general interest? I do have some ideas but some inspiration could be helpful.

Hi Everyone

Latest news on the Tarab Show is that there are now more places available for the after-show party. The restaurant owner called us today to say that although all the original places were filled, he's putting the restaurant over to the Tarab cast and audience from 10pm onwards. He's so excited about the show that he's holding the fixed-price menu at the special price of £15 a head. What a guy!

And that's not all.............he's confirmed that there will be live bellydance at the restaurant for the party. The dancer was lovely on the night that we went to check the restaurant out. All this with lovely scrumptious Moroccan food.

So you get a fantastic show with live performance by Phil Thornton, amazing digital projections and the lovely Rashani World Fusion dancers and you get a fantastic meal with another show and a chance to dance the night away yourself.

What are you waiting for? Get booking before you miss your chance! It's no good complaining when all the tickets are gone !! www.pedralta.com
Or call the Box Office 01543 414597

I've been dancing cabaret style for about a year. I had my first improv situation last week...boy was that uncomfortable. I've got some music from my teacher, but I'd like to get my hands on some more. I've been listening to the same cd over and over and over and over. I'd like to get my hands on some other stuff. Pop, to folkloric to whatever else there is to be found.

Any suggestions?

.....I'm looking for the pop saidi piece she and the Sahlala dancers used in one of the IAMED awards video's. All I remember was they were in red costumes doing cane, and they finished with a zar number. The song was upbeat with a heavy beat, if anyone knows the song or artist it would be appreciated!!

Hi,
I'm new to this tribe and trying to teach my dance students about middle eastern rhythms. Right now we're working on masmoudi khebir.
Other than "rhythm cds", does anyone have suggestions for songs that have masmoudi khebir as one of the rhythms?

Thanks for any help !

Scales?

Can you please look under this link: http://almashriq.hiof.no/egypt/700/780/umKoulthoum/Songs/
scroll down there is a chronological list of all of Oum Kalthoum's songs. I asked in the "Egyptian style"-tribe what was meant by mode and they said scales.
I wasn't sure did they look because under "mode" you find: Bayati, Jihar kah, Hijaz, Hijaz kar, Kurd, Nahawand, Shuri, Rast, Huzam, Shahnaz, Ushahaq, Mahur, Ajam, Nakriz, Saba, Rahit il-Arwah, Tarz jadid, Ajam 'Ushayran, Zinjran, Kirdan, 'Iraq, Nawa athir - are all of those scales?

The genre: I would be glad if someone could also explain this category to me. I know now that Taqtuqah means "love song" but there are also "monologue", "dawwr", "quasidah", "ugniyah"...

History of Middle Eastern Music

I am a long time amateur drummer who's been playing for a local belly dancing group for the last couple of years. I'm enjoying the music and am spending a fair amount of time trying to develop the technique. But I'd like to learn more about the music. When I ask about "classical" middle eastern music, I usually hear about music in the 1930's or so (which is good). But I believe that there was an infusion of Middle Eastern Instruments to the West in the Middle Ages. I have come across recordings of Eastern music transcribed by western composers in the 1700s. What are the specific musical styles and how did they develop. How did the instruments develop. How did the specific melodic scales get started? etc., etc. Enough anyhow! Anybody have suggestions (or interest)?

Music played at bedside - inappropriate?

*cross-post from the Ethnomusictherapy tribe*

I learned something new, so now I need confirmation on it. One of my patient's family members told me the other day that in Middle Eastern cultures it is considered inappropriate to have music played at the bedside for one who is very sick and/or dying. She herself did not follow this belief, but was hesitant to have music for her father, who was dying, and would have to consult her brother on the issue. I never heard back from them.
So can anyone tell me, is this true? It would explain why so many of my Arabic, Middle Eastern, and Assyrian patients have often refused music while they are in the hospital.

Hi guys... My name is Joe.. I am new to this forum, tribe, whatever you want to call it. I am a singer from Detroit. I specialize in Chaldean, assyrian, Arabic, Turkish, and Kurdish Music. I am chaldean ( that is.. a christian from Iraq...we speak aramaic)...I am looking for a nice high quality but inexpensive zurna... I want to use it to sample the sound of the zurna onto my keyboards. Keyboards these days have a the capability to record sounds of an ethnic instrument and be able to the assign the sounds according to the keys on the keyboard. This way, I can play the zurna on the keyboard. There are not many zurna players here in michigan, so its hard to bring a zurna player to a wedding party or other occasion. I am an amateur zurna player, with not much experience, but i hope it won't be that dificult to learn.

Thanks for Reading

I am excited to hear your opinions in response to this subject.

God Bless

I'm so in love with Saidi-music. The rythm just drags you out to dance. It's absolutely irresistible. I love the Mizmar, too. It also blends perfectly with pop.

Can you name a few beautiful Saidis to look out for? Whenever I ask, people don't know the names...

favorite music for specific audiences?

Hello from Dallas!
I am looking for suggestions for music to perform to that is popular with specific audiences.
I am searching specifically for Persian, Turkish and Iraqi audiences.
For example, when I perform for an Egyptian audience I dance to some classics from artists like Farid el- Attrash and Oum Kalthoum or some pop favorites from Hakim.
However, for other audiences like Persian or Turkish parties, what do you suggest?
I also want to be sure that belly dancing to the suggested songs is appropriate. Thank you!!

A doumbeck or a dombeck to be more specific. I am a bellydancer and I am going on a retreat in a few months that requires me to bring a drum so I can learn the essiential rhythms. That being said, I am looking for something light and compact if possible because I have to fly to my destination. I am also on a budget. I am not looking to become a percussionist. I totally respect you and would rather honnor the music through dance than through my occational off beat playing.does any one have any suggestions?

Thank you Masters of the Music

Hi,
I'm a bellydance student from Germany. I have some dance teachers and I squeeze the poor ones whenever I can for more information but I try to remain polite because they have many students...I need information on the music we are dancing to. Just anything, everything. For example: The song El hobbe kollo. Is this an old old song (sounds rather not so old, but it might be because I only know an instrumentation I'd say maybe from the seventies? - and there is no singing on it). Have there been composers that added great bellydance music or are they all profiting from the past or lets say the stuff that always has been there, maybe polishing it or remixing? I guess not, but have there been special periods and are there great songs from the seventies, eighties, that have become classics like for example the earlier "hits" from Abdel Halim Hafez?

I really like Mario Kirlis from Argentina (although sometimes the sound of his Roland-keyboard is still difficult for me, it reminds me too much of church-ceremonies) and I'm proud to say "German" Sayed Balaha (living in Berlin, of course no German "aborigine") as actual composers.

All meals are provided by our professional chef and feature a gourmet menu with an eclectic array of world cuisines and a full bar serving reasonably priced mixed drinks, beer, and wine after dinner. Evenings feature concerts and dance performances by students and staff in the immaculate Heart Lodge, and open-floor dancing with late-night jamming afterwards.
Ultimately, Kosmos is both a school of music and dance, as well as an unforgettable celebration among friends. It is a special getaway where people bond their passions and talents. We hope you join us and help create a unique community that we all can cherish in the years to come.

FCBD General Skills Certification - Sept/07 - Toronto, Canada

Carolena Nericcio and Megha Gavin teach ATS General Skills Certification workshop Sept 7 through 9th, 2007 in Toronto Canada.

Registration online or by phone
http://www.cleopatrasbazaar.com/product_info.php?cPath=53&products_id=1071
1.800.431.0418

The general skills intensive is a 15 hour course, usually taken at the FCBD studio, with Carolena teaching. With only 20 people in Toronto, you will have Carolena and Megha teaching and coaching. You will receive instruction in anatomy as it applies to dance, music theory, instruction in all FCBD steps and concepts, drills, critique and question and answer time.

In order to attend this workshop, you MUST have prior ATS knowledge either via class, workshop or FCBD instructional dvds. This is a must - not an option. Usually a dvd or in-person assessment is required in order to qualify for registration, but this has been waived for this event. Do not disappoint Carolena or Megha - be well prepared with the material. All volumes of FCBD dvds can be purchased through Cleopatra's Bazaar or directly from FCBD.

Once completed, you will receive a General Skills for ATS certificate. It should be noted that completing this certification does not qualify one to be an authorized ATS teacher.

Also included in the registration are gourmet catered vegetarian lunches each day, water and juice for all participants.

Please bring finger cymbals

Class schedule:
Lunch 12:30 - 1:30 pm
Class 1:30 to 4 pm
Searching for Middle Eastern music artists to interview

Hi my name is Yeli and I am belly dancer in Dallas.
I am also the editor of the North texas Middle Eastern Dance Association publication called Papyrus. I am doing an issue that will focus on the music that we dance too. I am searching for some musicians to interview or write an article about playing Middle Eastern music for belly dancers. Live music, recorded etc.
I would like to highlight some musicians or groups, bands, etc., in our next publication.
Would anyone be interested in working with me to either write an article (800-1000 words) or work with me through an interview to be written up in the magazine?

My topic is kind of broad and open right now. I currently have articles that focus on understanding (playing on the zills) the various Arabic rhythms, understanding the lyrics you are dancing to, choosing fusion music wisely and picking the right music for your audience.

I would be interested in sharing with our readers things like: how can belly dancers work with live musicians to put on the best show for the audience; how do live bands or musicians react to or feed off of dancers when they perform; or other things that musicians would like to share with belly dancers.

Writers would be spotlighted with a picture and by-line.

This publication reaches over 400 people in the North Texas (Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin) area.

My deadline for the publication is June 8th.
I would appreciate any assistance!
Thank you!
Yeli

Kosmos Music & Dance Camp, June 14th-17th

Check out the website:

www.kosmoscamp.com

The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors, with wall mirrors in the main lodge. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures.
And all campers enjoy the luxuries of Saratoga Springs Resort, nestled just over 2 hours north of both San Francisco and Sacramento in 260 private acres of forest. Miles of hiking trails with breathtaking views of nearby Clearlake and access to natural mineral springs, surround a pair of lodges with both indoor sleeping accommodations and clean camp grounds, complete with a spacious pool and large jacuzzi.
